Custom promotional gifts from China

Key takeaways
- Compare recipient usefulness, finished specifications and delivered cost; a small or flat gift is not automatically the economical choice.
- Quote blanks, branding, setup, physical samples and packing separately, and verify the charges for the chosen print method.
- Battery-powered gifts need configuration-specific carrier review; a tight event deadline also warrants a comparable local-stock quote.
Start with the recipient, useful quantity, approved design and latest receiving date. Then compare the complete cost of the same finished gift, including branding, sampling, packaging, checks and delivery. A low blank-item price does not answer whether the custom order works.
1688 Gifts focuses on custom gifts and provides full-process progress tracking. Before work begins, agree the stages, required evidence, decision owner and communication arrangements. Tracking should show what has been confirmed, what is waiting for approval and what changed; it cannot remove sampling, production or transport uncertainty.

-
Totes and textiles
confirm material, finished size, seams and print. Obtain external carton measurements even when the product folds flat.
-
Pens, keyrings and other small items
check function, finish, artwork area and useful quantity. Compact size alone does not establish quality or landed cost.
-
Drinkware
review intended use, destination requirements and protective packaging before comparing its price with non-food-contact gifts.
-
Apparel
specify size breakdown, measurements and fabric construction. Unusable sizes still consume the event budget.

Shortlist by practical use and packing
- Totes and textiles: confirm material, finished size, seams and print. Obtain external carton measurements even when the product folds flat.
- Pens, keyrings and other small items: check function, finish, artwork area and useful quantity. Compact size alone does not establish quality or landed cost.
- Drinkware: review intended use, destination requirements and protective packaging before comparing its price with non-food-contact gifts.
- Apparel: specify size breakdown, measurements and fabric construction. Unusable sizes still consume the event budget.
A documented promotional-product failure that changes the brief
Public-source check on 2 October 2026: we read the product description, distribution details and recall status in Del Maguey’s 1 May 2023 company announcement hosted by FDA. The recalled small ceramic drinking cups had been distributed free at US events and tastings as well as in retail packs; the stated issue was possible excess leachable lead. The page now says the recall is completed and terminated.
Buyer decision: free distribution is not a reason to omit the finished drinking vessel from the safety review. Ask for evidence covering the body, glaze and final decoration, and keep the giveaway lot identifiable. This historical product-specific announcement is not a test result for a Chinese supplier or for your mug, and gives no failure-rate estimate.

Identify the extra checks before ordering
Large hollow or assembled products may occupy costly space. Compare a safe flat-packed alternative and any destination assembly work using measured cartons.
Battery-powered gifts require carrier review of chemistry, rating, configuration, packaging and documents. Some can be transported under appropriate conditions; do not infer acceptance from an ordinary gift quote.
For a tight event date, price stocked local alternatives alongside imports before approving production.
What branding adds
Ask for separate prices for blank goods, branding, setup, physical samples and packaging. Printing may have a different minimum from the blank product.
Some screen and pad-print jobs use colour-by-position setup charges. Other methods use different models; request the actual breakdown instead of assuming two colours on two sides always means four setups.
Approve a versioned layout and a physical sample, then agree production inspection. Photographs can check some visible details but cannot guarantee colour or durability.
Numbers to confirm before ordering
- Stock minimum: request the quantity and unit price for each item, design and colour.
- Custom-print minimum: ask separately for each print method and artwork version.
- Print set-up: request any plate, screen or artwork fee as a separate line item.
- Sampling: confirm the sample cost and dispatch date before approving production.
- Production: obtain a dated schedule after the artwork and physical sample are approved.
What full-process progress tracking should contain
Agree this record at quotation. For each stage, use planned date, actual status, evidence reference, open exception, decision owner and next decision date. “Supplier says finished” and “buyer-approved evidence received” are different statuses. The tracking medium, reporting frequency and any photographs or videos must be agreed; no portal or real-time feed is assumed here.
- Brief: approved quantity by variant, intended recipient/use, destination, maximum complete spend and required receiving date. Hold quoting alternatives apart until the buyer chooses the scope.
- Artwork: filename and revision, dimensions and position, print method, colour reference and proof approval. A changed logo file reopens proof approval even if the filename looks similar.
- Physical sample: sample ID, substrate/finish, actual decoration, observations and accepted limitations. Release bulk production only against the approved sample and specification, or a separately recorded buyer decision on a clearly described exception. Mandatory safety and document requirements must still be resolved.
- Production: agreed milestone dates, quantity by variant and evidence requested for the order. Record delays or material changes with their effect on later gates; elapsed days alone do not establish completion.
- Inspection: lot, sampling scope, measured results, defect counts, photographs where agreed and disposition of each issue. Keep inspection findings separate from any laboratory or regulatory assessment.
- Packing: approved inserts/boxes, count and variant labels, external carton measurements and gross weights. Changed packaging triggers a freight and protection review.
- Dispatch: shipment contents matched to the packing list, carrier/service acceptance and actual handover evidence. A label or booking reference by itself does not establish carrier collection.
- Handover: receiving contact, delivered carton count, reported discrepancies and remedy owner. Close the record after the agreed receiving checks and resolution of exceptions, not merely when a tracking number exists.
Three practical release decisions for a branded order
Hypothetical approve: a tote sample has the agreed logo revision, measured placement, readable small text and seam performance under the agreed check. Record its sample ID and approve that configuration for production; do not extend approval to another fabric or print process.
Hypothetical hold: the printed navy tote needs a white underbase that was absent from the quote. Obtain the revised sample, cost and dated schedule before approving the change. A digital proof alone cannot resolve physical ink coverage.
Hypothetical reject or switch: a pre-event inspection shows an unapproved logo revision and the verified rework plan misses your local fallback deadline. Ask for a compliant stocked alternative or exercise the agreed remedy. Do not dispatch known unusable gifts solely because transport has been booked.

Questions & answers
Common questions
- What is the smallest realistic branded order?
- There is no universal minimum. Ask for quotes at your target quantity using different print methods, and compare the delivered price with printing domestically on blank stock.
- Can I get my own packaging?
- Ask whether custom packaging is available, then obtain its minimum per design, insert and printing cost, sample schedule and effect on carton dimensions.
- Will the colour match my brand guide?
- A suitable colour reference and physical sample make the target clearer, but substrate and process still affect the result. Agree an acceptable range and inspection method.
- Does full-process tracking mean a live dashboard or daily videos?
- The communication method, update frequency and evidence format are agreed for the service. Do not assume a dashboard, live feed, daily media or guaranteed timeline. Ask for a stage record with outstanding decisions and exceptions.
