Check Finished Gift Cards for Fold, Trim and Copy Loss
Map how received folds and cut edges affect each card’s approved reading panels, without confusing observations with affected-card counts.
A folded gift card can contain every approved word and still present the message incorrectly. The closing line may disappear into a fold, an inside panel may face the wrong way, or a cut edge may remove part of a name. At receiving, the decision is whether the identified finished cards preserve the approved reading experience.
For a custom gift order sourced through 1688, keep the received card beside the retained folded sample and final copy reference. Build a card-by-card finishing map before deciding which observations require correction. Do not shorten the message or refold the delivery to make the discrepancy disappear.
Keep the approved presentation in view
Identify the sample, card construction, copy revision and agreed finished dimensions. Record the intended opening direction and which panel the recipient sees first. Use the established panel names, such as front, inside message and back, so that the supplier can locate the finding without rotating an image by guesswork.
If the physical sample and written panel map disagree, preserve both references and ask the approval owner which governs. A receiving operator should not choose whichever reference makes the delivery look acceptable. Missing tolerances also remain missing: a visibly different margin is an observation, but this article supplies no universal permitted displacement.
The custom gift printing guide covers the earlier proof and sample gates. This check starts with those approvals already in place and follows the received object through its approved reading positions.
Separate four kinds of finishing evidence
Begin with the card as received, including its existing fold. Capture the complete front and back before making detail images. If ordinary opening is permitted by the agreed instructions, show the inside in its intended reading orientation. An unfolded view is useful only where the construction permits it without flattening, reverse-folding or otherwise changing the evidence. Stop if opening creates resistance or damage.
Record these observations separately:
- Fold position: where the existing fold crosses the approved panel and whether its alignment visibly changes along the card
- Trim position: which finished edge differs from the reference and whether an agreed dimension was actually measured
- Panel orientation: whether the copy is upright in the approved opening sequence
- Copy consequence: the exact character, line or graphic region that is missing, cut through or hidden in that state
A slanting fold and a hidden closing line can be two observations on one card. Conversely, a short-looking margin may leave all copy present and readable. Avoid collapsing every difference into “bad cutting,” which assigns a manufacturing cause before it has been established.
Adobe distinguishes the artwork beyond the trim boundary from the boundary defining the finished sheet. Its guidance also directs users to the print shop for job-specific bleed requirements. Those distinctions help read the approved reference; they do not set a receiving tolerance. Adobe printer’s marks and bleeds
Make a finished-card defect map
Use one card ID across all its views. Put annotations on a copy of the image and retain the unmarked original. Name the observed edge in the card’s reading orientation, rather than calling it “left” in one rotated photograph and “bottom” in another.
The following entries are fictional examples of how to complete the map. Replace them with the actual approved construction and observations.
| Card ID | Approved presentation | Fold observation | Trim observation | Copy region and consequence | Evidence pair |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FC-03 | Open inside message upright | Fold crosses closing-line region | No departure recorded in checked views | Last line present in open view, hidden in approved presentation | Whole card 03-A; inside 03-B |
| FC-08 | Front upright, fold at top | Fold appears slanted relative to reference | Right edge intersects final letter | Final character physically incomplete | Front 08-A; edge detail 08-B |
| FC-12 | Inside message upright on opening | Fold position not assessed | Trim position not assessed | Message upside down in intended opening sequence | Closed 12-A; opening 12-B |
Add the actual comparison dimensions when measurement is part of the service. Record the measurement basis and instrument used; do not derive millimetres from an unscaled phone photograph. “Not assessed” should remain distinct from “checked with no departure recorded.”
The map should also retain cards with no recorded finding, so the checked quantity is recoverable. Keep untouched bundles and inaccessible panels outside the inspected count. A photo of the top card in a stack does not show the finishing of the cards beneath it.
Work the quantities without counting a card twice
Consider an entirely fictional receipt of 240 cards. An agreed, illustrative review covers 24 identified cards; it is not a recommended sampling plan. FC-03 has one presentation finding. FC-08 has two observations, fold slant and missing part of a letter. FC-12 has one orientation finding. The other 21 checked cards have no recorded departure within the reviewed views.
That is four observations across three unique affected cards, not four affected cards. The receiving scope is 24 checked and 240 − 24 = 216 unchecked cards. These counts do not establish a defect rate for the delivery or authorize its release.
For FC-03, the open view establishes that the words exist on the sheet. It does not resolve the recipient’s view: the closing line is hidden when the card takes the approved presentation. Record the two states together. The buyer can then compare that specific consequence with the agreed requirement instead of debating whether the text was printed at all.
For FC-08, preserve the incomplete character before any proposed correction. Replacing the card, changing its dimensions or altering its copy are different proposals. None should be performed merely to obtain a cleaner evidence photo. The observation also does not establish whether artwork placement, cutting, folding or another process caused the result.
Decide on the card as the recipient encounters it
Ask the decision owner to address each affected card group against the accepted criteria: present the delivered card, hold it for a defined correction, or request further evidence. Where a proposed solution changes the approved opening or removes words, return that change to the buyer and copy owner. An operational workaround is still a change.
For replacements, retain the original card IDs and identify the new receipt or group. Repeat the relevant closed, opening and inside views against the same approved reference. Record whether the original copy consequence remains and whether another panel has changed. A photo showing only the corrected line leaves the rest of the agreed presentation unexamined.
In the agreed custom-gift progress record, this milestone should identify the finishing map, affected quantity, decision owner, unresolved presentation and next evidence due. Reporting format and frequency are agreed with people responsible for the order; no automated tracking system is assumed.
Use Get a quote to describe the card construction, approved reference and requested non-destructive observation scope. Provide links, descriptions or PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF previews; arrange original artwork and sensitive copy transfer separately. Confirm service availability, fees and timing before assigning the work. The useful deliverable is a supported presentation decision for identified cards, with unchecked cards and unproved causes still visible.
Frequently asked questions
What if all the text is present when the card is unfolded?
Check the agreed recipient-facing presentation as well. A line visible on an open sheet may be concealed when the card follows the approved fold. Record both states under the same card ID and let the buyer judge the consequence against the accepted sample; do not change the fold to make the evidence appear satisfactory.
Can the receiver choose a standard trim tolerance when none was agreed?
No. Record any safely obtained measurements and the exact reference used, but ask the approval owner to supply or resolve the acceptance basis. A software bleed setting, another printer’s margin or an attractive sample is not authority to invent a tolerance for this order.
Does a cut-off letter show that the printer used the wrong file?
It establishes that the observed finished copy is incomplete at that location. The file, printed placement, trim and fold records may be needed to investigate why. Preserve the received card and avoid assigning a production cause from one photograph.
What should a replacement-card check show?
Identify the replacement group and link it to the original affected cards. Revisit the approved closed, opening and inside views, including the formerly missing or hidden copy. State which replacement cards were checked, what remains unchecked and who approved the resulting presentation decision.
