What does the gift supplier’s minimum actually cover?

Last updated

Published by 1688 Gifts · Review method

Key takeaways

  • Separate the minimums for blank stock, production, printing and packaging; each colour or artwork can change the quantity required.
  • The split-colour example uses invented USD inputs to show why a lower price per purchased piece can cost more per gift actually needed.
  • Compare the target quantity with useful carton and price breaks, including samples and delivery, without assuming future demand for extras.

Ask for the minimum for each colour, artwork version and packaging design. “MOQ 100” is incomplete until the seller states whether it means 100 pieces in total, 100 of each colour, one full carton or one print run.

For a first order, buy only enough to meet the real use or demand after samples are approved. A lower unit price for extra stock is not a saving if those units have no planned use.

Four minimums that can apply to one order
  1. Blank stock

exact SKU, current colour and size, minimum purchase and available quantity. Ask whether the seller will reserve stock and for how long.

  2. Production

minimum for a new body, fabric colour, mould or finish. A small blank-stock order does not establish the minimum for making more.

  3. Branding

quantity per artwork, colourway, print position and process. Confirm whether different blank colours can use one approved print setup.

  4. Packaging

minimum per box size and design, including printed sleeves, inserts and labels. Ask whether unused custom packaging must be paid for or stored.

Four minimums that can apply to one order

  • Blank stock: exact SKU, current colour and size, minimum purchase and available quantity. Ask whether the seller will reserve stock and for how long.
  • Production: minimum for a new body, fabric colour, mould or finish. A small blank-stock order does not establish the minimum for making more.
  • Branding: quantity per artwork, colourway, print position and process. Confirm whether different blank colours can use one approved print setup.
  • Packaging: minimum per box size and design, including printed sleeves, inserts and labels. Ask whether unused custom packaging must be paid for or stored.

Public MOQ check: stock decoration and a custom build are different offers

Desk research on 2 October 2026: we read the Minimum order row and MOQ & Pricing section of Jinman Bags’ own tote page. It advertised one piece for logo printing on in-stock totes and 100 pieces for fully custom totes. Those are the seller’s published entry conditions for two different services, not independently verified stock or accepted order terms.

The useful finding is the scope difference: a one-piece logo offer does not establish a one-piece custom size, fabric colour or retail box. Copy the relevant service scope into your enquiry and ask which ordered variants share the minimum. We did not contact this seller, inspect its factory, order a sample or validate its other marketing claims.

Comparison check: a standard minimum can still need a project-specific answer

On the same date we read Kyuri Bags’ opening specification and Flexible MOQ section. Its own page stated a standard minimum from 300 pieces and said selected lower-volume projects may be possible at adjusted pricing. The page did not resolve our hypothetical split of 120 natural and 80 navy totes into accepted quantities per colour.

These two first-party pages demonstrate different published starting conditions, not a representative China-wide MOQ range or a supplier ranking. For a 200-piece brief, request a written exception or stock-based alternative where needed; do not turn “may be possible” into an accepted order. Recheck the exact page and obtain a dated quote before committing.

Send a variant schedule instead of one total quantity

List one line per combination, for example “natural tote, black front logo, 120 pieces” and “navy tote, white front logo, 80 pieces”. Include dimensions, material, handle construction, print size, delivery date and whether alternatives are acceptable.

Have the seller reply on every line with blank-stock minimum, print minimum, units per carton, actual order quantity, unit price and setup fee. A total of 200 pieces does not tell you whether an 80-piece colour variant is accepted.

  • Can the same screen or artwork file be reused across the two colourways? Will a different ink or underbase add a charge?
  • Does the quotation include all ordered pieces, or are setup samples and overrun quantities extra?
  • If one colour sells out before printing, must you approve a substitute or can you cancel that line?
  • Are repeat-order setup, screen storage and artwork retrieval charges defined? Do not assume they are waived.

Illustrative split-colour arithmetic

This is a teaching example dated 2 October 2026, not a current MOQ or market quote. Assume 200 identical-size stock totes for an adult event delivered to one UK business: 120 natural and 80 navy. All amounts are USD and the blank tote is assumed to cost $1.80. Ignore currency movements and assume no production overrun.

Offer A allows the split: blanks 200 × $1.80 = $360; print 200 × $0.30 = $60; two assumed setups of $35 = $70. Goods plus print total $490, or $2.45 per required gift.

Offer B is assumed to require 100 per colour: order 120 natural and 100 navy. Blanks 220 × $1.80 = $396; print 220 × $0.30 = $66; setups $70. Total $532. Its per-purchased-piece cost is about $2.42, but the cost per 200 required gifts is $2.66 before using or selling the 20 extras.

Offer C uses one accepted blank colour and one logo version: blanks $360, print $60 and one $35 setup = $455, or $2.275 per required gift before rounding. It only solves the problem if a single colour meets the event brief.

All three omit sampling, packaging, China freight, service/QC, international freight, tax and final delivery. These need separate quotes; the extra 20 bags may change carton count. The invented $35 setups demonstrate a quote structure, not a promise about a printing process.

Negotiation that preserves the specification

  • Ask for a smaller quantity using stock colours or standard packaging before proposing a new material or finish.
  • Ask whether paying a disclosed setup fee makes the intended quantity possible. Compare the resulting total with the supplier’s minimum run.
  • Compare fewer designs, a shared logo or blank stock printed locally. Each is a different product brief that needs your approval.
  • Do not promise a future large order merely to obtain today’s price. Request the actual price for a stand-alone test order.
  • If combining sellers, price domestic collection, counting, storage and export packing. Consolidation does not erase each seller’s minimum.

When a small import is not worth it

Obtain a local alternative when samples and setup exceed the value of the useful units, required documents are unavailable, a hard date leaves no correction window, or shipping minimums dominate the order. A larger import does not solve an unverified product or missed deadline.

For the quote request on this site, provide your variant schedule, preferred and maximum useful quantities, artwork, destination postcode and latest receiving date. Ask for target quantity, next carton break and next genuine price break as three separate alternatives.

Approve the quantity line before authorising custom work

Hypothetical acceptance: the quote names both tote colours, confirms 120 + 80 accepted pieces, identifies the approved artwork and packaging, and states whether there are billable overruns. That closes the quantity question only; sampling, compliance, cost and timing still need approval.

Hypothetical hold: a header says “MOQ 100” while the reply changes the navy line from 80 to 100 or makes you buy 500 printed boxes. Ask for a corrected line-item total and the use or disposal plan for extras. Reject an unapproved substitution or open-ended overrun charge rather than letting it enter production.

For custom gifts, 1688 Gifts provides full-process progress tracking. Begin the record with the accepted variant schedule, who approved it and the version/date. Any later colour, quantity or packaging change should reopen the affected cost, sample and deadline decisions. Agree the communication method and update arrangements in the service scope.

Questions & answers

Common questions

Can I buy one sample?
Ask for the sample price, whether it is from current production, and whether any fee is credited if an order proceeds. A blank sample cannot approve custom printing.
Does MOQ apply per logo or per colour?
It can apply to either or both, depending on stock and production. Obtain separate written answers for blank colours, artwork versions, print positions and packaging.
Should I order more to reduce the unit price?
Compare total cash outlay and cost per useful unit. Include extra packing, freight, storage and the risk of leftover event-specific stock.
